A voyage of discovery
In the midst of "Toyota Country" I am taking the (mystifying to many!) plunge and buying a Land Rover Discovery 3! In fact, the very one in this picture. Its a 2007 SE diesel with about 47,000km on the clock - although the engine and turbo is brand new, replaced under warranty.

Why not a Toyota or Nissan or something? Like the sentiments in that link it really just comes down to what you like. I'm even willing to put up with a few hassles due to a few known reliability issues these "discos" have. If I was just after value for money and reliability... then yeah I'd drive a Toyota. Hopefully the reliability isn't so bad that I regret my gamble!

Done a lot of research and was very impressed - and this was only verified to me when I test drove one at the local stealer. Reliability or value questions aside (which are an important part of the equation still I know), there is no other car that comes close to the D3 in my opinion. The refinement of the ride, the factory offroad ability, the space and comfort inside (even the 3rd row seats) are just fantastic.

The first models (2004-2005) had quite a few issues - too many even for me! But the word is that there have been many improvements in subsequent models and that from 2007 onwards they're pretty right.

Gwenny and I are flying down to Melbourne tomorrow night and hopefully driving the car back to Darwin - leaving the Friday and getting back Monday sometime. My helpful Tojo family have already told me that the car trailer is ready for when I ring them for help! :)

Will keep you posted. Hopefully its not another famous err of judgement on my behalf! :)

Some good landrover links;
